NCEA Level 2 Japanese
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr S. Lendrum.
Now that you know the basic Hiragana and Katakana scripts, at Level 2 Japanese you will learn and become more confident with Kanji.
The course is focused on comparing life in Japan and life as you know it. Do you want to be able to explore and compare different kinds of accommodation in Japan when you organise a trip with your family or friends? Find out about what life would be like as an exchange student in Japan? Explore Anime as part of Japanese Pop Culture? You will learn to do this at Level 2 Japanese. You will also learn to talk about sports, focusing on the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo which have of course been postpone to 2021, Japanese food, in particular, obento; and we will compare common New Zealand and Japanese customs.
Through this course you will continue to develop the core skills for learning languages: listening, reading, communicating through writing and speaking, and presenting.
You will increase cultural knowledge and develop empathy by discussing other people’s points of view.
Recommended Prior Learning
A minimum of 14 credits in Level 1 Japanese or approval from the Head of Department.

Pathway
Be able to watch anime ‘subbed, not dubbed’, improve your memory, expand your creativity, help your listening skills and increase your career options through learning Japanese. Learning Japanese also enables you to travel to or even study in Japan. It’s not unusual for someone to first learn Japanese and then move on to other East Asian Languages. It is great to know Japanese when thinking about a career in anything from a Psychologist, Librarian, Social Worker, Outdoor Recreation Instructor to Customs or Immigration officer, Flight Attendant, Teacher etc
