NCEA Level 1 Te Reo Māori

Course Description

In this course we will explore our immediate environment and focus on areas of personal interest and current issues.

We will consider and discuss the importance of tikanga Māori including karakia, pōwhiri and pepeha, and kapa haka will be an integral component of the course. All students will be expected to participate in school events that involve tikanga Māori such as Matariki, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, blessings and pōwhiri.

Through this course you will develop the core skills in te reo Māori: listening, reading, presenting and communicating through speaking and writing.

You will gain more confidence in communicating with others in familiar contexts.

Recommended Prior Learning

You will have completed year 10 te reo Māori and interest in the course or approval from the Languages Head of Department.

Pathway

Knowledge and appreciation of Te Reo Māori, culture and values is highly recognised in a wide range of professions. This is because the government and private sectors know and understand the reciprocal benefits of partnering with Māori organisations. Learning Te Reo Māori can lead to a career in law, policing, education, health, social practice, research, journalism and media, tourism and community development, to name but a few pathways.
