NCEA Level 3 Science Physics Contextual
Course Description
In this Level 3 contextualised physics course, students will be learning about applications in the field outside of classical Newtonian mechanics. We start the year by investigating modern physics and Earth science concepts that allow us to determine the date of the extinction event which ended the Cretaceous period, the last time dinosaurs walked the earth. We then turn our gaze to the depths of outer space to use atomic physics and observational astronomy to discover Earth-like worlds ripe for future colonisation, as well as discussing the ethical implications of doing so. In the final term of the year, we learn about applications of waves which include the Doppler Effect, the physics behind musical instruments, and practical uses of laser technology.
NB Due to the mixture of Physics, Earth and Space Science standards which make up this course, it is officially classified as Level 3 Science (general) for the purposes of university entrance. Keep this in mind when choosing between 03PHY and 03PHX.
Although the course offers more than 20 credits, the required 14 credits could be gained from any combination of the Level 3 standards provided by the course, in consultation with the teacher, student and parents.
Recommended Prior Learning
You will need to have gained 14 credits in any Level 2 Science course, including 7 credits from Level 2 Physics.
